APRIL 2, 1992: Discussion: Cover
for book, dark green with gold, recessed county seal displaying pine
tree and pick
and shovel. Dorothy did not like the draft of a tree so
she took a picture of a pine tree for the seal on the cover. The
likeness of a shovel presented to us looked like an old Indian
hatchet. Member of Book Committee, Fannie Steele persuaded her husband
Letcher and son Randy Steele to draw a picture of a pick and shovel
for the seal at the suggestion of the publisher, Don
Mills.
JULY 16, 1992: Membership had previously voted to
become the Wise County Historical
Society upon completion of the Wise
County and City of Norton Heritage book. The Committee has
agreed to help with the Fall Fling on October 13, 1992. "Walking
History Tour" suggested by Rhonda Robertson. 43 books
pre-sold.
AUGUST 6, 1992: Wise Appalachian Hospital
Regional Hospital. Update of progress of the Town Meetings in the
month of July . Brochures mailed. 79 Family Histories have
been received. Historical Society of Wise County will be
officially organized on August 13, 1992.
AUGUST 10, 1992: Members of the Topographical
Committee met to discuss the locations that needed to be covered
for the book. Topographical Committee: Bill Porter, Dolly Watson, Esther Congo,
Wanda Rose, Fannie Steele, Rhonda Robertson, Paul Kilgore, Bud
Osborne, Bill Gobble, Gladys Stallard, Nancy Brown, Anna Ruth
Breeding, Emma Jane James, Jewell Willis, Dorla Goins, Bill Hendrick,
Dorothy Witt, Rosa Herron, Garnett Gilliam.
AUGUST 13, 1992: Wise Appalachian Hospital: Ronnie
Montgomery present with instructions on establishing a Historical
Society for Wise County. Proposed Articles of Incorporation,
Charter, By-Laws, need for officers and Committee members. Officers: Dorothy Witt, President; Wanda Rose, Vice President; Rhonda
Robertson, Secretary; Sue Gilliam, Treasurer.
DIRECTORS: Esther Congo, Wise; Betty Belcher,
Pound; Bill Porter: Coeburn; Leroy Hilton, St. Paul; Gladys Stallard,
Norton; Dolly Opal Watson, Appalachia; Bill Gobble, Big Stone
Gap. Motion to authorize Ronnie Montgomery to begin
procedure for articles of Incorporate for The Wise County Historical
Society. Discussion for the need to establish archives for
the Historical Society.
SEPTEMBER 3, 1992: Met at Wise Appalachian Regional
Hospital. Don Mills informed the members present that mailers
would be produced and distributed by the Coalfield Progress on
September 18th. TV ads, Radio and Century Cable public access
channel are continuing.
NOVEMBER 14, 1992: First meeting held in the
localities: Appalachia, VA
Charter for The Wise County Historical Society was officially recorded
September 28, 1992. Motion to elect individuals to the positions of
Historian and Publicity Chair person. Nomination: Gladys Stallard for
Historian and Evelyn Slemp for Publicity Chairperson. Motion
carried. Program: Bill Gobble - THE EARLY YEARS by Bill
Hendricks. Dolly Opal Watson presentation of an audio tape by
Mrs. J.M. Johnson on Early Appalachia.
APRIL 24, 1993: Coeburn Public library. Minute of silent prayer
for Evelyn Slemp who died March 9, 1993. Resolution for a
memorial for Evelyn Slemp to be entered into the minutes. Motion
to make Ronnie Montgomery a lifetime member for his contribution to
the Wise County Historical Society. Committee to approach the
Wise County Board of Supervisors. Election of new publicity
person. All book material is with publisher in Missouri.
Continue to take orders for books.
MAY 8, 1993: Wise County/City of Norton
Heritage Book has been dedicated to Evelyn Slemp with accompanying
memorial. Special call meeting to resolve the number of books to be
ordered. Next meeting at Pound.
JULY 23, 1993: Wise County Courthouse:
Blue lines have been mailed and will be returned to the printer as soon
as possible. September Program: a slide presentation on a Native
American site discovered during the Highway work on US 58 will be
presented by an archaeologist from the College of William and
Mary. The college will present six volumes of information on
excavations in Southwest Virginia to the Historical Society.
Doug Baker of The Wise County Board of Supervisors
presented the Historical Society with the wooden hands from the
Courthouse clock. The hands are on display in the Archives at the
Courthouse. Motion to send a letter of thanks to the Wise County Board
of Supervisors.
Further requested that the letter ask that any
items of a possible historical or genealogical nature that might be
discarded from the courthouse, that the Society be contacted to view
the items and be given first refusal. Ernie Benko of
MCA Cable to be contacted about his interest in taping the Historical
Society of Wise County meetings. Treasurers Report: 961 books
sold.
Wise County Courthouse: Motion to pay Don Mills of
Walworth Publishing the entire balance of the Wise County Book
Committee account. Announcement of the next project of the
Historical Society: The publication of Wise County Cemeteries.
Volunteers are needed to copy cemeteries and bring or mail those lists
to the Society. Committee for restoration clock
hands. Used Book Sale to be set for September.
AUGUST 26, 1993: Wise County Courthouse -
Historical Society Archives Office. Election of Officers to
replace outgoing members appointed for one year terms. Vice
President -Wanda Rose requested that she not be re-nominated for that
position: William Gobble was nominated for President and
elected.
The Wise County and City of Norton Heritage Book will be available for sale at
the Wise Fall Fling, October 9th and 10th. No checks will
be accepted in the amount of 41.50 after 8/31/93. The cost of the
history will be 58.00 if picked up and 61.00 if mailed.
Don Mills is sponsoring a dinner for all members of the Wise
County/City of Norton Heritage at the Western Steer in Norton on
September 2, 1993 at 4:00 p.m.
Wise County (VA) Historical Society members and
